STICKTOITIVENESS…..

No you won’t find that word in the dictionary, but now that many of us have made our New Years resolutions I have a perfect example of how to stick to it and see it to fruition, (thereby making us proud as a peacock), and what famous winners said about sticking to it.  It has to do with one our little furry friends.

But first our humor section to put a smile on your face first, or rather perhaps you should read what the experts say about laughter.

Dr. Michael Miller, director of the Center for Preventative Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, reported that laughter pumps up the heart.  Dr. Miller, who examined 20 healthy volunteers, looked at how blood vessels react when participants watched movie clips that were either humorous or stressful.  He found that blood flow increased by an average of 22 percent in 19 of the 20 participants when they laughed and decreased by 35 percent in 14 of the 20 when they tensed up.  Dr. Miller says, “A good belly laugh should be a part of everyone’s daily life.”

In the 1990’s Lee Burk, an associate research professor for the pathology and human anatomy at the Loma Linda University, conducted several studies that showed that laughter improves the body’s immune system by reducing adrenaline, a hormone that boosts the heart rate.

Former Saturday Review magazine editor Norman Cousins, found himself with a debilitating arthritic condition that causes severe pain.  So he began watching funny movies, made a dramatic recovery and chronicled the experience in his 1979 best-selling book, Anatomy of an Illness as perceived by the patient:  Reflections on healing and Regeneration.

Or as the Great comedian Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
Our great President Woodrow Wilson was dying and said to his close advisor Napoleon Hill, “Those damn men on capitol hill have killed me.”  Napoleon looked hard and long at that great president and then said, “Mr. President, ultimately nothing matters.”

The moral of this story………Don’t take life or yourself too seriously……..

Let’s get back to what some famous people stated about sticking to it.

“Determine that the thing shall and can be done and we shall find the way.”
“If you do not know where you are going, you might not get there.”
“Obstacles are those frightful things we see when we take our eyes off the goal.”
“We can do anything we want as long as we stick to it long enough.”
“Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses defeat.”
“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”
“The power to shape the future is earned through persistence.  No other quality is as essential to success.  It is the sandpaper that breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles.  It is the ability to move mountains one grain of sand at a time.”

I will give you several hints.  Two of the quotes are by US Presidents.  One is by an ex baseball player.  One is by a famous General who almost conquered the world, until he met his ________.  Two are by famous ladies.  One is by a successful businessman, author and motivator.

The first two people to guess the people who made those profound statements will receive an autographed copy of my book.

While writing my book a fantastic and funny thing happened to me, which convinced me to write chapter 5.
Here is an excerpt from that chapter. ..
Today I learned a valuable lesson. Three weeks ago I filled up the bird feeder outside with some of the feed I give my parakeet. Guess what animal first came to feed. For all you squirrel lovers out there, you know how persistent they can be when they want to get at food. Well, this little rascal would get on the feeder, and I would walk outside and chase him away. Guess what? He would come back ten minutes later, sometimes from a different direction. I would chase him away, but he just kept coming back. Suddenly it dawned on me that God was teaching me a lesson.
When you have a goal, keep at it. I am now letting him feed for a few minutes and then chasing him away so there is enough for the birds, but mainly because I want him to constantly remind me how important persistence is. There he is again. Gosh, how I love that little rascal. He is just sitting there daring me to chase him away. He is saying go ahead chase me away, I will be back.
I keep watching and learning from my little friend the squirrel, and I decided to put grease on the roof of the bird feeder to test him or her. At first he jumped on the roof and slid off. It was comical, but he came back and tried again and again. Suddenly, he figured out how to cling onto the area on the side that was not greased. Presto! Now he is getting the food again. I have decided to put more grease on the roof and sides to see how he figures it out. I have no doubt that he will figure it out in time, because he is patient and analytical. He sits on the branch and analyzes which direction to jump from to be able to cling on to the least greasy spot. What a great lesson God teaches us through the animals he created.

Of all the qualities needed to make for a success, persistence is one of the hardest to acquire. Think about it for a second. Life is grand when things are going your way, but when you hit that snag in the road, it suddenly seems the words impossible, or too difficult pop up and especially from the negative thinkers. They will chime in with, “see I told you so.” Or they will say, “Why don’t you give up this foolishness and use your common sense.” The list goes on and on. But don’t listen to them. Take the positive route and use the failure as a learning experience. Remember that life is a learning experience and no road was ever paved straight and true.

Every road has curves and hills and valleys to traverse to get to the final destination. Go to your library when you have a major setback and read the biographies of famous people. You will find out that each and every one faced a setback, but they did not take their eyes off the goal. Think of Thomas Edison and the many experiments he went through to develop the light bulb. Plus he spent over $40,000 in research and development before he finally came up with the vacuum and carbon filament that produced the long lasting light bulb. That was in the 1870’s. Persistence is when your hands and feet keep working, even though your head says it can’t be done.

Stay tuned for some exciting information in March from a wonderful lady, author Jill Vanderwood.  Like me, Jill likes to help out with children’s causes, and has written two children’s stories.  You can find her at http://www.throughtherug.com  I will write more about her exciting charity cause.
